Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidayalaya

Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidayalaya is the third Sanskrit University of India to be established in Puri, Odisha, the holy land of Lord Jagannath on 4th July 1981. The other two Sanskrit Universities include Sampurnananda Sanskrit University of Benaras and Kameswar Singh Sanskrit University of Darabhanga. The establishment of this University has helped to revive the glorious ancient traditions of Odisha in the field of Sanskrit language, Literature and heritage learning.

The then Chief Minster of Odisha and eminent scholar of Sanskrit, Prajnana Vachaspati Sj. Janaki Ballabh Pattanayak , an eminent scholar of Sanskrit laid the foundation stone on 7th July 1981. 

There were 12 members in the first Adhisad (Academic Council). The first Samsad has 62 members and the first Vidya Parisad had 40 members. Post Graduate classes in six departments , namely Sahitya , Vyakarana , Dharmashastra , Sarvdarshan , Nyaya and Advaita Vedanta were inaugurated in  rented building with 12 rooms.

Currently  the University manages 142 Sanskrit institutions of the state including 5 Mahavidyalayas and 137 Vidyalayas , Pathasalas and Tools offering Prathama , Madhyama , Upashastri , Shastri and Acharya courses.

Centre of Advance Research in Sanskrit (CARS) 

Right from its inception , the Vishvavidyalaya has dedicated itself to the cause of reserving and promoting studies and research in Sanskrit.  With the support of the Government, the Research Centre came up. It was later renamed as Centre of Advance Research in Sanskrit which has published Research journals named “Jagannath Jyoti” and 33 books in regular intervals.

The primary objective of the Centre of Advance Research in Sanskrit (CARS) is to achieve outstanding research excellence.

Objectives and Activities of CARS

The objectives and activities of the Centre are:
  • To co-ordinate research and publication activities of various projects undertaken by the Centre/University.
  • To promote training and interdisciplinary research programmes.
  • To promote collaboration in researches with Indian Indological and oriental Institution/Department/Universities and such other bodies and those of foreign countries.
  • To preview and evaluate the progress of research by organising seminars/symposia and workshop, etc.
Since 2000 AD the Vishvavidyalaya has handed over the charge of conducting examinations the Prathama and Madhyama Vidyalayas of the state to the Board of Secondary Education of Odisha.

Library of Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidayalaya

The majestic central library which was built in the year 1991 currently accommodates 35000 books, 500  referral journals and 200 manuscripts. The library building has an ideal reading room which can be used by more than be used by 300 students at a time . 

There is also a special provision  for presentation of palm leaf manuscripts which will be edited in case of time and published by the  research centre for the benefit of the students and researcher.

Post Graduate in Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidayalaya

Shastri degree  from this University or any Sanskrit Examination which is recognised or that which is equivalent to BA Hons in Sanskrit  and have secured at ;east 40% marks are eligible to apply
PhD in Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidayalaya.

Ph.D in Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidayalaya

For Phd in Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidayalaya entrance exam is conducted and admission is based on the marks obtained in the entrance exam. However, candidates who have UGC-NET qualified are exempted from the entrance test. MPhil degree holders are also exempted from the entrance test.

B.Ed (Shiksha Shastri) in Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidayalaya

The applicants should be having either of the following degrees- Shastri /BA /MA/ Acharya or any other degree equivalent thereto. The candidates should qualify in the Shiksha Shastri Entrance Test (SSET) with Sanskrit as a subject in the qualifying degree exam.
