Educational Profile of Odisha

Odisha has been in the forefront of education and research since several ages. There are evidences of scholars from various parts of the world visting Odisha for research n philosophy, astronomy, mathematics and science in Pushpagiri, one the oldest universities of India. 

The Cuttack Zilla school, Odisha's first modern school was established in 1866 and later extended to Colleggiate school in 1868.Several years later the Zilla school was converted into a full bachelor's degree granting college under the then commissioner, T. E. Ravenshaw. This college was named as Ravenshaw College after him. Women’s education also received a lot of importance with the establishment of the Ravenshaw Hindu Girls' School in 1873. 

Over the past few decades, Odisha government introduced several education reforms for the development of education. The central and state governments have introduced several plans that are working towards empowering the women and the tribals of Orissa and teaching them the benefits of education. According to the census reports of 2011, Orissa has achieved a literacy rate of 73.5% which is a whopping rise from the 2001 literacy rate of 63.08%.

The 10 2 structure of schooling is followed in Orissa. Children in Orissa take admission in schools by the age of five. There are three curriculums or boards followed in the schools of Orissa namely, the State board, CBSE and ICSE. Every student has to give two board examinations, one at the end of class X and the second at the age of class XII to seek admission to a state college.
